Zi Lai, or just Zi for short, is a goat Ilaan mercenary and the main character of the story Terms of Engagement and Shoot to Kill.

Bio

Zi Lai is a goat Ilaan born on August 1st, 1979, on her parents' rice farm outside of Beijing, China. As a kid she went to a public school with regular human children and a few more Ilaans, though she was the youngest of these. While in school she learned English and at home learned to speak Chinese, as well as some Korean from her father. She completed all of her schooling by the age of 17 and chose to work the rice farm with both of her parents. It wasn't until she was 19 that she would express a desire to leave China to go somewhere else in the world. Her parents were hesitant at first, fearing that they would lose their only child to something that would be worthless. However, over time they supported her in her search for a place to go and she chose an opportunity to move to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa.

At 20 years old she came to Yahuma, DRC by plane. Once there she found a job working as help on a local farm owned by an English couple. While working there she met another Ilaan, a bull by the name of Nathan Sayre responsible for guarding the shipments of food sent out by truck. They took a liking to each other and began dating shortly after. While dating, the two of them got involved in running opium for local cartels. When this was brought to light with their employers, they were terminated. Her and Nathan would start their own gang and would make more money than they ever had while working on the farm. Soon their empire would bring attention to other gangs and the government. Her gang would go on to eliminate one of the bigger drug empires in the country shortly before her 22nd birthday. In celebration, Nathan would gift her a gold-plated Ak-47 and Desert Eagle, the latter of which she would carry with her for self-defense. At the age of 23 she commited her first murder by decapitating a rival gang member with a machete.

She would take a step away from gang activities when she discovered that she was pregnant. On January 24th, 2003, her son, Le, was born. She would raise him away from the knowledge and influence of their life of crime as possible.

Her ability to keep Le away from the bloodshed would come to an end on his 8th birthday while at a market in Lubutu when they were approached by a couple of bounty hunters, requesting that she and the boy come quietly. Managing to lull them into a false sense of security when she agreed, she quickly turned the tide and shot both of them dead right in front of him. They got out of there, leaving Le traumatized at what he'd just witnessed.

Increasing attention to her and Nathan's crimes were bring more and more bounty hunters and the goverment. With this becoming more and more of an issue, her and Nathan discussed getting Le out of the country. She recommended sending him to live with her parents in China for the time being. Nathan wanted them both out of Africa, and in late 2011 chose that sending them both to China was the best idea.

Things did not go as planned in China as the government arrested them as enemies of the People's Republic of China and had them both deported. When she arrived in Egypt, she discovered that she was alone and that Le was still in China. Infuriated, she demanded that her son be brought to her. The Egyptian government denied her requests and sent her back to the DRC to prison.

In transit to prison, she was freed by Nathan and a few of gang members. They returned to their hideout where she explained that she and Le were arrested in China, they were deported, she returned alone, and that they wouldn't send him back. Plans were quickly being thrown together to get to China and break him out of wherever he was being held. Then bounty hunters, and the military showed up which began a shoot out lasting twelve hours. It ended with their arrests, and everything they owned being seized. She and Nathan were saved by a mercenary by the name Harley Gieck who requested that they meet him in Kenya for further instructions. They left immediately.

He told them of the mercenary group he worked for, Serverbob, needing new recruits from around the world and wanted them to join him. He added that they may be able to help get their son back in due time. With that they both joined and left for the United States.
